Both are cotton, and both feel soft in the shop. The difference is in how the fibre is grown and how the fabric is processed before it reaches your child. Here is a plain comparison to help you decide what is worth paying for.
The short answer
Certified organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, and, when the whole garment is GOTS certified, it is also dyed, printed and finished under strict chemical rules. Regular cotton has no such controls unless a brand chooses to add them.
Side by side
| GOTS-certified organic cotton | Regular cotton | |
|---|---|---|
| Farming | No synthetic pesticides or fertilisers; non-GMO seed | Synthetic inputs allowed |
| Dyes and prints | Restricted list; toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde and harmful azo dyes banned | Depends on the factory |
| Finishing | Many chemical finishes not allowed | Softeners, anti-wrinkle resins and other finishes common |
| Traceability | Every stage independently certified | Usually none |
| Factory conditions | Social criteria audited | Varies |
| How to verify | Certification number on the label, checkable online | Brand claims only |
Does it matter for children?
Children's skin is thinner than adults', and they wear sleepwear for many hours at a stretch. Choosing fabric made under strict chemical limits is a simple way to reduce what sits against their skin every night. It is also why many parents start with organic sleepwear and baby clothes first.
Watch out for these labels
- "Organic feel" or "natural cotton": not certifications.
- "Made with organic cotton": can mean as little as 70% organic fibre under GOTS rules, or less without certification.
- No certificate number: ask the brand for it. A genuine certified supplier can share it.
Is organic worth the price?
Organic cotton costs more to grow and certify, so it usually costs more in the shop. Buying factory-direct removes much of that gap. Our cord sets are GOTS certified (certification no. 010677), printed in our own facility, and priced at ₹999 with free shipping across India.
