Almost every kidswear label in India now says "organic". Very few can prove it. If you are buying for a newborn or a child with sensitive skin, the word that matters is not "organic" — it is GOTS certified. Here is what that means, how to check it, and why we built Bunny Loves Organic around it.
What is GOTS?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading international standard for organic textiles. It does not only check the cotton field. It follows the fibre through spinning, knitting, dyeing, printing, sewing and packing, and every company in that chain must be independently certified.
- "Organic" grade: at least 95% certified organic fibre.
- "Made with organic" grade: at least 70% certified organic fibre.
- Chemical rules: dyes, inks and finishes must meet strict limits. Substances such as toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde and azo dyes that release harmful amines are banned.
- Social rules: no child labour or forced labour, safe working conditions and fair treatment across the factory floor.
Why it matters for baby and kids clothing
A baby's skin is thinner and more absorbent than an adult's, and children wear their clothes for long hours — including all night in pyjamas. Conventional garments can carry residues from pesticides, harsh dyes and chemical finishes such as anti-wrinkle resins. GOTS sets limits at every stage, so what touches your child's skin has been checked from fibre to finished garment, not just at the farm.
How to check a brand's claim in 2 minutes
- Look for the GOTS logo with a certifier name and a licence or certificate number on the label or product page.
- Search that company in the public GOTS certified suppliers database.
- Confirm the certificate is valid and covers the product category (for example, kids garments or printing).
- Be careful with phrases like "organic feel", "eco-cotton" or "natural cotton" — these are not certifications.
Printing is where most "organic" clothes fall short
The cotton may be organic, but the print often is not. Plastisol and some conventional screen inks are heavy, sit on top of the fabric and can contain substances GOTS does not allow. We print in-house on our own digital reactive and digital pigment lines, with inks and processes inside our GOTS scope. That is how we can offer detailed, watercolour-style artwork like our Dinosaur Cord Set without compromising the organic promise.
