Organic cotton is one of the gentlest fabrics you can put on a child, and it gets softer with every wash. A few simple habits keep it soft, keep the print bright and help one set last through a younger sibling too.
The 4 rules we give every parent
- Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Cold water protects the fibres and the print. Turning the garment inside out stops the printed surface rubbing against zips and denim in the drum.
- Tumble dry low, or line dry in shade. Strong direct sun fades any coloured fabric over time. Shade-drying on a balcony is ideal in Indian weather.
- Warm iron on the reverse if needed. Never iron directly on the print.
- Skip bleach and strong stain removers. They weaken cotton fibres and dull colours.
Handling everyday stains
- Food and milk: rinse from the back with cold water as soon as you can, then wash as normal. Hot water can set protein stains.
- Turmeric and curry: rinse cold, then dry in indirect daylight; turmeric stains usually fade with a few washes.
- Mud and grass: let mud dry, brush it off, then wash cold.
Why organic cotton gets softer, not rougher
Conventional fabrics are often finished with chemical softeners that wash out, leaving the cloth stiffer than when you bought it. GOTS-certified organic cotton cannot use many of those finishes, so the softness you feel comes from the fibre itself and keeps improving with wear. Our fabric is also pre-shrunk, so it holds its size after washing.
Make it last for the next child
Fold sleepwear instead of hanging it so the shoulders do not stretch, and store it dry in a cotton bag rather than plastic. Well-cared-for organic cotton passes down beautifully.
